Former Pathologist Finds New Passion in Art, Showcasing Vibrant Works Across New Jersey and Beyond

Dr. Neela Pushparaj, MD, a retired pathologist with a rich history in the medical field, has found a new calling as a talented watercolor artist. After dedicating over three decades to medicine, including her esteemed position at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dr. Pushparaj has embraced her artistic side, captivating audiences with her vibrant and expressive watercolor creations.

Born in India, Dr. Pushparaj earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree from Anna University in 1963 before relocating to the United States. She completed her internship at Franklin Square Hospital and specialized in anatomic and clinical pathology during her residency at Henry Ford Hospital.

Further honing her expertise, Dr. Pushparaj completed a fellowship in oncologic pathology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. As a respected member of various professional organizations, including the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, she made significant contributions to the medical community until her retirement in January 2000.

In 1987, at the age of 49, Dr. Pushparaj discovered her passion for painting through watercolor lessons at the Summit Adult Education program. Under the guidance of Sarita Anne Cook, she quickly fell in love with the medium and pursued formal training at du’ Cret School of Art in Plainfield, New Jersey. Dr. Pushparaj’s unique approach to watercolor involves adding colors to wet or damp paper, allowing her to extract shapes through negative painting. Her floral artworks are particularly renowned for their bright, vibrant colors and abstract qualities.

Dr. Pushparaj has achieved notable recognition, with her prints displayed in prestigious locations such as the Radiology Department of Atlantic City Medical Center and the 6th floor of St. Francis Hospital. She has actively contributed to the community through fundraising events for the Summit Rotary Club scholarship and the St. Francis Hospital Foundation.

As a member of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, the Garden State Watercolor Society, and the Essex Watercolor Club, Dr. Pushparaj continues to inspire others through her art. Recently, she served as the art director for WomanArt, a program supporting women artists in the tri-state area, and is now a designer for VIDA.com, having been giving lessons at her home in Summit.
