About

Dr Abreu Velez is a board-certified dermatologist from Colombia with a Ph.D. in immunology and Biomedical Sciences and has completed three post-doctoral fellowships; the first was in autoimmune blistering diseases with Luis A Diaz, M.D. She trained with Ernst Beutner; Ph.D. considered the Father of Immunodermatology. Her second postdoctoral fellowship was in France in INSERN (the French equivalent of NIH) in skin autoimmunity. Her third postdoctoral fellowship was from Emory University Winship Cancer Institute in cancer immunology and cell cycle regulation. She further has certification in clinical trial management from the Medical College of Georgia.

Both Drs. Howard and Abreu Velez are the only people in Georgia who have had the honor to cooperate in research and publish with both Dr. Beutner and Martin C. Mihm, M.D. from Harvard University, considered the top expert in melanoma dermatopathology worldwide. The work experience of Drs Abreu and Howard combined is more than 60 years.

We have also performed research and published with professors at Emory University including Hans Grossniklaus, M.D., considered one of the best ocular pathologists in the world. We have also cooperated in research and published with other researchers at Stanford University, the University of Rochester, Osaka University in Japan, and many other institutions.

Our practice has generated the most publications written in Georgia of all dermatology private practices in the state.

Outside of the laboratory, we have funded and participated in an amazing community program involving a group of about 300 patients in El Bagre, Colombia South America. These patients are affected by a new variant of endemic pemphigus foliaceus (El Bagre EPF). We have provided food, medications, clothing, hospitalizations, skin biopsies and research, all for no compensation. Indeed, Georgia Dermatopathology Associates has funded these programs for 15 years and has multiple volunteers in Colombia including multiple medical students and residents. Therefore, your valuable skin biopsies sent to us will have a tremendous impact: indirectly helping people who live under exceedingly difficult life conditions. Please refer to the websites below:
