A board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Belayev joined the Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic in 2016. In addition to his clinical practice as a general neurosurgeon, he specializes in the treatment of neurovascular disorders including aneurysms, vascular malformations of the brain and spine, carotid artery stenosis, and the acute treatment of stroke.
“Bringing me onboard gives us an additional way to treat these disorders through endovascular techniques. The most rewarding part about my job is seeing my patients recover. Specifically, patients with stroke, because the effect is almost immediate. It’s one of the most rewarding experiences that I think any surgeon can have” expressed the doctor.
Academically, he developed a passion for neurosurgery early in his career, conducting research on stroke and head trauma during both college and medical school. He earned his medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and completed his residency in neurosurgery at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he served as Chief Resident.
Subsequently, Dr. Belayev went on to complete a fellowship in both open cerebrovascular surgery and endovascular neurosurgery at the prestigious Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Memphis. He also completed a fellowship and advanced clinical training in microvascular and endovascular neurosurgery with the World Federation of Neurological Societies in Nagoya, Japan.
As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in neurosurgery through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS), and is an active member of the North Carolina Medical Society, the Wake County Medical Society, and the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery. He is the author of 12 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has been invited to present his research findings at respected clinical meetings around the world.
Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
On a more personal note, Dr. Belayev’s interests outside of medicine include spending time with his family, traveling, hiking, tennis, and exploring all that North Carolina has to offer. He is married and together with his wife have made Raleigh their home. In addition to English, he is fluent in medical Spanish, allowing him to attend to the unique language needs of his patients.
