Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Anthony Cosmo Caruso, who serves patients in Austin, Texas.

A devoted cardiologist, Dr. Caruso has a commitment to diagnosing, monitoring, and treating a wide range of heart and vascular conditions. His expertise encompasses the management of conditions such as heart attacks, heart murmurs, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. His approach to medicine extends beyond treatment; he is a passionate advocate for preventative healthcare, assisting his patients in maintaining heart-healthy lifestyles to prevent cardiovascular issues.

With a broad educational background, he embarked on his medical journey in 1983 when he earned his Medical Degree from the prestigious Georgetown University School of Medicine. Following medical school, he furthered his education and honed his skills during a residency at Richmond Community Hospital, where he gained invaluable experience in the field of cardiology. Furthermore, he holds fellowships in Cardiology from Georgetown University Medical Center/Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., and in Clinical Electrophysiology from Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. Additionally, he completed his residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his medical background, his extensive educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in British Literature, awarded Phi Beta Kappa, from Syracuse University in 1975. Dr. Caruso also pursued graduate studies in Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, solidifying his foundation in the sciences.

Recognized as a diplomat by the National Board of Medical Examiners and by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the Specialty of Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, the doctor is board-certified in cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Among his other roles, Dr. Caruso serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, where he imparts his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of medical professionals. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a testament to his dedication to the field.

Continuously advancing his efforts, he is an active member of the American College of Cardiology, The North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, The American Heart Association, and The Travis County Medical Society.

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Caruso actively participates in charitable and philanthropic endeavors, supporting causes close to his heart. He is involved with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, contributing to the advancement of research and treatments for this debilitating disease.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
