Upon moving to South Florida in 1986, she obtained her Doctor of Psychology in clinical psychology degree (Psy.D) from the Miami Institute of Psychology. Since completing her doctoral degree, she has worked in a multitude of clinical and forensic settings. In a clinical setting, she has expertise in conducting comprehensive psychological evaluations and providing individual psychotherapy utilizing a cognitive-behavioral (CBT) approach to psychotherapy. In the forensic setting, she conducts psychological evaluations, provides court-ready reports, and testifies in both civil and criminal cases

Her work in as an expert witness in the Michelle Theer capitol murder case gained her national recognition and led to Dr. Layton-Tholl appearing on Dateline NBC and in multiple Discovery ID episodes highlighting her work in the case.
