  • What foods should I avoid with a kidney stone?

Short answer is; avoid salt and drink plenty of fluids. Long answer is; avoid salt and drink plenty of fluids. Have stone analysis and 24-hour urine analysis, and your doctor will guide you if any ‘additional’ restrictions are needed. READ MORE

  • Can kidney infection be fixed with antibiotics?

If you truly have a urinary tract infection (kidney infection), antibiotics are essential in treatment and are usually sufficient, but every patient is different. Always consult with your doctor. READ MORE

  • Kidney issue?

Blood in the urine is NOT normal. Cystoscopy (camera is the bladder) is one step to evaluate that. Uro CT scan is another step and is required to complete the evaluation and find the source of the bleed. I would go for it. READ MORE

  • How many days should I take antibiotics for a kidney infection?

Your treating doctor will advise you on the duration of antibiotics, but for simple urinary tract infection, it’s between 3 to 7 days. Hopefully you are not “self-treating” your infection since unguided use of antibiotics can result in a long list of adverse outcomes in the short and long run. READ MORE

  • Will kidney infection resolve on its own?

Usually kidney infections (urinary tract infections) require a course or more of antibiotics. I would always take kidney infections seriously as they may quickly progress to a case of wide spread infection called sepsis which can be fatal. Do not delay treatment and always consult with your doctor. READ MORE

  • Is a kidney CT scan safe?

Kidney CT scan usually involves injecting contrast material (IV dye) which can cause allergic reactions in rare cases, but CT scan centers are typically equipped to deal with this type of reaction. Exposure to radiation has its own delayed risks, and while it is a small dose of radiation, repeated exposure can cause accumulative effect. Keep in mind that in Medicine, doctors always try to balance the risks and benefits, and the kidney CT scan can give you the answer for your current kidney disease. READ MORE

  • GFR

Yes, there are ways to measure the GFR of each one of the kidneys usually in the nuclear medicine labs, but this testing is not routinely performed unless there is a surgical intervention is planned on the kidneys. Consult with your doctor. READ MORE

  • What diet to avoid with a kidney infection?

No diet restrictions are recommended with kidney infections, but you need fluids, plenty of fluids, of course unless you have another medical condition that prevents you from drinking large quantities of fluids. READ MORE

  • How long does end-stage kidney failure last?

End-stage kidney disease is usually a life long condition that becomes dependent on replacement therapies like dialysis or transplant. Saying that, occasionally patients are labeled as end-stage kidney disease because of the delayed recovery of a reversible cause of acute kidney failure. Your doctor can tell you what the reason is, and monitor for any signs of renal recovery. READ MORE

  • Can I eat meat if I have a kidney infection?

No restrictions on eating meat while having uncomplicated kidney function. READ MORE

  • Can kidney stones go away?

Depends on the size of the stone, if can be flushed out by drinking copious amounts of fluids while taking certain medications that facilitate its passage. If you have tendency for stone formation, drinking fluids, restricting salt and in some cases taking medications specific for the type of kidney stone can prevent or slow down stone formation. Since every patient is different, and every stone is different, your doctor can answer questions specific to your case. READ MORE

  • Can a kidney infection go away without medications?

While it is possible, kidney infections have to be taken seriously as they may progress quickly to a severe case of wide spread infection called sepsis which can be fetal. Always consult with your doctor. READ MORE
