Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Simona Chivu, who serves patients in New Lenox, Illinois.

Dr. Chivu is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist with expertise in treating a broad array of cancers and blood disorders and a clinical experience of more than 10 years. She has a special interest in breast, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers.

Her practice is based at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois, where patients receive the expertise and investigational therapies of the University of Chicago Medicine in a convenient community setting.

Academically, Dr. Chivu earned her medical degree from the Transilvania University School of Medicine. She then went on to complete her residency and fellowship training at Sparrow Hospital.

Following her training, the doctor attained board certification in medical oncology, hematology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Teaching students, Dr. Chivu serves as a Clinical Associate of Medicine within the Department of Medicine, Section of Hematology / Oncology at the University of Chicago.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Among her various accolades, Dr. Chivu has been recognized as a Regional Top Doctor by Castle Connolly Magazine, and has been the recipient of the Chicago Magazine Top Cancer Doctor Award (2017, 2019), Chicago Magazine Top Aging Doctor Award (2020), Chicago Magazine Top Doctor Award (2021), and Exceptional Women in Medicine Award (2019, 2020).
