Get to know Internist Dr. Rudxandra Aguiar, who serves patients in Austin, Texas.
Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Aguiar is a board-certified internist at Austin Regional Clinic (ARC) Southwest on Slaughter Lane, which she joined in 2015. She has always been interested in healing both body and soul because she believes they are one entity. She likes the challenge of making diagnoses from small clues, like a detective.
“I chose internal medicine because it provides me the opportunity to develop effective and longitudinal relationships with patients, as well as the opportunity to guide them towards a healthier lifestyle. Patients always come first in my practice. With my knowledge, compassion, ability to be a good listener, and interest in innovative care practices, I give my patients the best and most modern care available. I believe in evidence-based medicine and that a clean diet and regular exercise are the basis to prevent disease” expressed the doctor.
Starting off her academic career in Cuba, Dr. Aguiar earned her medical degree from the Medical University of Havana in 2005. Following medical school, she studied and practiced medicine in Guatemala and New York City. Thereafter, she went on to complete her internship and residency at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut in 2013 and 2015, respectively.
Subsequent to her education, she attained board certification in internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
A member of the ARC Executive Board, Dr. Aguiar is also a member of the Travis County Medical Society and the American College of Physicians.
Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.
Growing up on a beach town in Cuba, Dr. Aguiar thought she could never live away from a beach until she came to Austin. In her free time, she enjoys the organic foods at the Farmers Market, exploring south Austin with her husband and two Chihuahuas, and running the trails at Lady Bird Lake. A big gardener, she also enjoys nature and music.
When it comes to wellness, Dr. Aguiar says prevention is key and recommends three healthy living rules: Eat real food, exercise often, and do something you enjoy.
