Alcohol is a depressant; when consumed in excessive amounts, it can create sensations of grogginess in the person, which can make it easier to fall asleep. Alcoholism aside, this may sound like a good instrument for those who have trouble sleeping. However, while alcohol can definitely help someone fall asleep, this effect is usually reversed once the substance leaves the system, and the person will often wake up in the middle of the night as a result.

In the same vein, consuming excess caffeine and green tea during the day can also have negative consequences on the person’s sleep schedule. Other elements that the person should avoid to promote proper sleep are cigarettes, heavy metals, spicy or acidic foods, refined carbohydrates, and sugars.

While these tips are certainly easier said than done, if followed correctly, they will likely help the person not only sleep for longer periods of time, but also the increased the quality of their sleep. Remember, everything the person does during the day is depending on a good night’s sleep. If he or she fails to rest properly during the night, then everything done during the day will suffer as a consequence.
