Overmedication in Nursing Homes Is Robbing Children of their Parents

The American government is being blamed for the mistreatment of nursing home residents

The Human Rights Watch report places blame at the feet of the government, which is legally responsible under the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 to protect the rights of nursing home residents. This report is troubling and shocking, but it's not new. The American government has been aware of the problem of overuse of antipsychotic medication for a long time, and due to this, they are required to monitor the frequency and circumstances of the drugs administered. In 2012, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services created an organization called the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes in order to address this issue.

Additionally, a report released earlier this year, which was the result of a bipartisan request by a group of United States senators, investigated the oversight of care in nursing homes.
