Sleep's Critical Role in Everything Humans Do
Sleep is essential for hormonal regulation
Sleep is one of those periods where the body secretes important growth hormones for use for multiple purposes. In children and youths, these are the famous hormones that help them grow taller with every passing night. However, while adults cease growing taller, these hormones continue to be produced and help in the regrowing of damaged tissue, as well as in rebuilding damaged muscle tissue after an intense workout. Other important hormones, such as leptin and ghrelin, which regulate hunger and appetite — especially in the morning — may become unbalanced in those who are sleep deprived. Those who don’t get enough sleep might find themselves partaking of sugary and fatty treats in increased amounts during the morning, which in turn may lead to weight gain.
