Understanding the disease is the primary strategy for communicating with people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, or any form of dementia. But you can also refer to these communication tips when interacting with people with Alzheimer’s:
- Patients with Alzheimer’s have difficulty in talking as their memory progressively gets worse over time. It is helpful to repeat familiar words and consistently describe objects to them when they lose their train of thought. They might return back to their native tongue, and they may even talk about their memories of the old and forget the later memories first. When talking to them, you need to adjust to their mood and make them comfortable with your presence.
