Strategies to Help Communicate with Alzheimer's Patients
Keeping their attention
When you get their attention, the next challenge is to keep them interested. To keep their attention, you have to remove distracting things, such as the TV and radio. It might also be helpful to talk to them in a quiet room and with closed doors. Talking near them and not looming over them is also advised. Touching them might also be helpful, using your hands and patting their shoulders may be simple gestures that might get their attention. However, you must only touch the patient with their consent or when you have established a sense of comfort with each other’s presence already.
