The Promising Future of Gene Therapy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
The future for children suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects 1 in 5,000 boys. Without proper treatment, these children can only see the light of day in their first 20 years. As Professor Darren Griffin of the University of Kent puts it, the disease is horrifying and life-threatening for young children. But, she also emphasized that real hope is forthcoming, especially after the success of the canine model. If these animals can be treated, it is not impossible to also find a cure for DMD patients. Currently, this study only hopes to gain sufficient funding to further conduct clinical trials.
