The Social Stigma with Diabetes

More Awareness

As a society, it is important to understand Type 1 and 2 on different levels.  On the surface, it is important to have a basic understanding of what diabetes is, especially the distinction between the different types.  Knowledge in regards to how diabetes results also proves to be of importance, but more importantly how diabetics manage the disease.  The understanding of what it takes to live every day, as well as some of the stress induced by others needs to be known, so that the diabetic population does not feel alone.  This can be combated with open discussions about diabetes, and how it makes the individuals that live with it each day feel.  Without this compassion and underlying empathy,  the negative social stigma will still persist.  There is of course hope, as the solution for a more integrated method of monitoring glucose is on the horizon, as well as a better life for the people living with diabetes.
