Coping with a Lack of Services After Autism Diagnosis
Waitlists are everywhere
Unfortunately, Jimmy Coursey, manager of outpatient rehabilitation services, said that wait lists are everywhere due to an inadequacy of therapists to meet such growing demands. Landon’s mother takes him to therapy in Louisville once a week because it is there that he can receive the services he requires. Louisville hosts several activities suitable for autistic children such as Landon. In fact, other parents who have autistic children said the same of Louisville. “Everything we need for autism, we have to go to Louisville for,” said Foster.
“The wait list breaks my heart because these parents want the best for their child. I couldn’t imagine how lost they must feel,” said Tara Drexler, occupational therapist at Hardin Memorial. As of last year, Hardin Memorial expanded its center and added more therapists to support more children. “It seems the more you add, the more the demand,” said Tara. As an occupational therapist, Tara works with autistic children to help them grow specific skills. She strives to work with entire families and help them better understand the disorder by continuing education and raising awareness.
