The US needs to focus more on prevention
If you have had a heart attack, or have been in car accident, or suffered severe burns, the United States has some of the best healthcare to treat you. However, if you want to prevent that heart attack from occurring in the first place, Europe is definitely a better place to receive your primary care. Why is this the case?
Our priorities are different and medical funding follows suit. In 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a publication called “The Power of Prevention: Chronic disease…the public health challenge of the 21st century.” With the United States spending more than any other nation, you would think that we would have some of the healthiest people in the world. However, that is not the case and 75 percent of our healthcare budget is spent on chronic conditions, many of which are preventable. Life expectancy in the United States is far below other nations including being less than most countries in Europe, as well as some in Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America.
