Here, Gluteus medius and Maximus are usually involved from the start of the ailment. They become progressively atrophied until the last stages of the ailment when every glutei muscle becomes atrophic. During these last stages, iliacus, and psoas muscles can actually become atrophic. Examples of muscles that are rarely involved include externus and Obturator internus.
