Overcoming the Emotional Obstacles with Lupus
Finding ways to reduce stress
- Managing stress levels: Getting adequate rest at night, exercising regularly (when able to), and meditation are just a few ways to deal with stress. Other ideas include deep breathing, guided imagery, and stretching and muscle relaxation. Plus coping with stress also means less inflammation since relaxation helps boost the body’s natural immunity.
- Having a hobby: Although lupus can put a damper on daily activities, finding pastimes that are enjoyable and fulfilling can help boost one’s mental state. Anything from reading a good book to volunteering (when able to do so) would help to keep a person’s mind occupied on the more positive aspects of life.
- Joining a support group: One of the most helpful things a person can do is to find a support group for other individuals with SLE. Also talking with a trusted friend, family member, or a pastor or a clergy member or counselor can help a person to unload the emotional burden.
