Overcoming the Emotional Obstacles with Lupus

Some hints for self-help

There are ways to cope with these issues and to deal with sudden changes to mood and mental health concerns, especially when flare-ups occur or when adjusting to treatment and therapy. Some useful hints include the following:

  • Educating oneself and others about the condition itself: Learning more about what to expect can be helpful so that symptoms or other factors aren’t such a “surprise.” Educating family members, friends, and even employers and co-workers can help tremendously. The more people are aware of what to anticipate in regard to lupus, the more prepared they might be to help in any way possible.
  • Maintaining (or adopting) healthy habits: A nutritious and balanced diet accompanied by light but consistent exercise can do wonders for the mood and mindset. This would also include staying away from sugary snacks, drinks, and alcohol, which can cause mood changes either by a sudden rush and drop in carb intake or by ingesting a depressant that has a tendency to increase inflammation in the first place.
