The Connection Between Celiac Disease and Depression
The indirect link between the two
While the study of Dr. Zylberberg shows that there is no direct correlation between depression and celiac disease, as well as adopting a gluten-free diet, there is still a linkage between the two conditions that can’t go ignored. The other two studies mentioned (by Hallert and Addolorato) that malnutrition and poor blood flow can affect the mental state of the patient. Both of which can be a result in adopting the gluten-free diet, which is a consequence of having celiac disease. The linkage may be a bit far off, but it is nevertheless there.
This is why the nutritional aspect of celiac disease and psychiatric conditions should also be taken into consideration when looking into this topic. Just as Dr. Zylberberg mentioned in her recommendations, future research should look more into the aspect of developing depression with respect to celiac disease. Of course, the nutritional factors that lead to depression can make future research very comprehensive.
