It's Time for Educators to Get Educated on Managing Children with Diabetes
Be understanding and patient
Some teachers do not encourage eating or drinking during their lesson, however, this could be an issue if there is a hypoglycemic in class. If there is, then the teacher should loosen their grip and allow the kid to eat or drink in order to prevent hypo or any other complication. Likewise, students shouldn’t be prevented to take insulin and should be allowed to keep their own equipment at their disposal.
As it is part of the job, teachers have to be strict with compliance of projects, quizzes, attendance and what not. However, children with diabetes shouldn’t be penalized for poor attendance or late submissions, mainly when it has to do with their illness. During class discussions, it is also necessary that the teacher listens to his or her views and take them into account.
