Temple Grandin’s Advice for Parents of Children with Autism

Encourage them as individuals

Much of Grandin’s work on autism revolves around the central message that a person with autism should be pushed to develop their skills and abilities according to the way that their mind works. Since every autistic child is different, the only way to ensure that an autistic child is given the opportunity to maximize their potential is to encourage them and push them as individuals. Grandin notes that “people on the autism spectrum tend to have uneven skills,” and that her specific skill set is what led her into the fields and career paths that she has walked.
