New Flight Simulator Event Helps Children with Autism Overcome Airport Stress
Why is this helpful?
Simulations such as this create a “practice” environment where families have the inside knowledge and reassurance that they are not actually leaving on a trip. This removes a certain level of stress. James Vaughn, president and cofounder of Families for Autism and Asperger’s Standing Together, hosted the event. He said that, “going through the process of ticketing and security, all of these things can be a little bit overwhelming for kids on the spectrum. We just provide them with an opportunity to share in that experience and get an idea of what the travel process is." About 100 people participated in the event. While the families were waiting in the terminal for the plane, they were brought water and security dogs came out to keep them company.
