Being Pregnant with Lupus: Tips for Mothers To-Be

Tips for pregnancy

Medications

A medical provider will work with a patient's lupus medications to protect them and their baby during the pregnancy. Hydroxychloroquine or Plaquenil and prednisone are safe to use during pregnancy. If one is on Methotrexate, discontinue the use for at least a month before getting pregnant. A doctor will help with weighing all the benefits and risks of the medications.

Planning

If you have lupus, it is essential that you plan your pregnancy. Because this isn’t always possible, you should only get pregnant after a health evaluation. Plan to get pregnant during a time of remission from flare-ups. If lupus isn’t active, you will have an easier time during your pregnancy.
