What Not to Say to Someone with Breast Cancer

Don't tell them they'll be okay

It's common for people to feel the urge to comfort someone who has breast cancer. Trying to stay positive and optimistic might take the form of overconfidence in a person's situation. However, breast cancer is a serious illness, and sometimes people aren't okay in the end. Pretending that things are okay will just make the situation worse. The patient and the doctors don't even know if things will be okay, so avoid telling someone with breast cancer that everything will be okay because it's simply not known. Instead, try to lift their spirits by noting how strong they are and encouraging their fight against this disease.
