Get to know Family Physician Dr. David A. Smith, who serves patients in Kensington, Maryland.

A seasoned family physician, Dr. Smith is affiliated with Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in Kensington, Maryland. He sees many people each day for routine health assessments that focus on screening for such conditions as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Typical conditions and medical problems he sees in his practice include: hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, sports injuries, depression, allergy, sinus conditions, asthma, and more.

Before embarking on his professional journey, he graduated with his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and completed his internship at Brown University – Miriam Hospital. He then went on to complete his residency in family medicine at the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP), the doctor attained board certification in family medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Smith is an active member of the Medical Society of Virginia, and the Phi Beta Kappa Medical Honor Society.

The doctor’s first medical practice was as a volunteer in a remote community in rural North Carolina “tobacco country” where he was the “town doctor.” He later moved to become one of the first partners in the opening of Kaiser Permanente in North Carolina. He helped build that practice to a membership of 35,000 served by a Permanente medical group of over 30 primary care and specialty care physicians. As a vice president for the region, he helped lead development of new outpatient practice design and win awards for patient service.

After moving to Northern Virginia to consult on the development of medical computer software, he returned to practicing medicine with the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in 2001. He has been practicing medicine in Kensington since 2016.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Smith has been the recipient of the Super Doctor Award by Washington Post Magazine in 2012 and 2013.
