About

Dr. Marc Hamet is an interventional radiologist practicing in Riverside, CT. Dr. Hamet specializes in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. Interventional radiologists use X-Rays, MRIs and other advanced imaging to put catheters in the body in order to treat the source of the disease internally. Many conditions that once required surgery can now have less risk, less pain and fewer invasions when treated by an interventional radiologist.

  • Can lung cancer be seen on an x-ray?

Lung cancer can be seen on an x-ray as a nodule or enlarged lymph nodes. However, CT is much more sensitive. READ MORE

  • Can an MRI scan detect prostate cancer?

An MRI can show the findings which would be suspicious for prostate carcinoma. An actual biopsy would be needed to confirm the diagnosis. The MR can be helpful in determining the location of the biopsy. READ MORE

  • Why would a doctor order a CT scan of the abdomen?

CT scan of the abdomen is one of the most common and useful tests in radiology. A huge amount of information can be collected from this quick test. Sometimes oral and IV contrast are used to help depending on the clinical situation. READ MORE

  • Is it safe for children to have X-rays?

The risk of an X-ray is the radiation exposure. People are exposed to radiation from different sources all of the time. It is known that at a certain level of exposure, bad things can happen. What is not known is the potential random effects of radiation, even at low levels. In theory the risk increases with a younger aged individual. Modern X-ray equipment is designed to minimize radiation exposure, but radiation cannot be completely eliminated. The increased radiation from a single X-ray is negligible. However, any radiological study should be taken into consideration with the risk of not doing the study. READ MORE

  • Will the MRI scan results be ready the same day?

Depending on the institution and what day of the week the MR is performed, the results should be available the same day. READ MORE

  • Is an MRI safe to use?

MRI is totally safe for most people. MRI works through the use of very powerful magnets. If you have metal within your body from injury, implants, prior surgery, or even some tatoos, the MRI environment may no be safe. You will be given a questionnaire to check if there is any danger to you. Some MR examinations require gadolinium contrast. This is also safe for most people. If you have a history of allergies, especially to gadolinium, you should be treated to prevent an infection. Some people who have poor kidney function may also have a problem with the gadolinium. • Can you see nerve damage in an MRI?

Yes, although it may depend on the nerve and the nature of the damage READ MORE

  • What are the treatment options for prostate cancer?

As with any cancer, treatment options range from local surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and sometimes, ablative treatments. It depends on the staging and extent of disease. This would best be addressed by the patient's oncologist or urologist. READ MORE

  • How successful is radiation therapy?

Depending on the nature of the tumor and staging, radiation may be quite effective. Treatment is tailored to the individual patient and best addressed by the oncologist. READ MORE

  • What's the difference between radiology and interventional radiology?

Radiology is the interpretation of radiological imaging to make a medical diagnosis. Interventional radiology is the use of radiological imaging to guide a physician while performing minimally invasive procedures, thus it is more therapeutic than diagnostic. Marc Hamet, MD, MBA READ MORE

  • Is endovenous laser ablation safe?

In the proper hands, this is a very safe and effective procedure. As with anything that goes through the skin, risks include bleeding and infection. The intention is to destroy the veins treated, however, there is sometimes injury to the surrounding soft tissues. Skin burns and nerve injury is possible. One should expect swelling and bruising lasting over a week after the procedure. Wearing compression hose helps. You should also be advised to walk 1/2 hour/day after the procedure. READ MORE

  • Are 4-D prostate scans necessary?

That depends on the situation. $-D imaging would be useful if there is a suspicion of prostate cancer and imaging would be useful in diagnosis or planning treatment. Findings such as an elevated PSA or nodule on physical exam might prompt such a study. At this point, however, it should not be used as a screening study. READ MORE

  • Can external beam radiation cure prostate cancer?

This would be a question more for someone in radiation oncology. However, if there is no metastatic disease, it could be curative. The patient should be monitored with serial PSA testing. READ MORE

  • Types of catheters used in interventional radiology?

There many different types of catheters used. They are selected for varying characteristics such as size, shape, material, stiffness... None are particularly painful. It all depends on what the catheter is being used for. Typically the most painful part of any IR procedure is the administration of numbing medication directly into the skin. READ MORE

  • What's focal therapy for prostate cancer?

High-intensity focused ultrasound. The idea is the ultrasound is directed at the area of disease in order to destroy the tissue in that area. READ MORE

  • Are there any risks with an embolization?

Embolization is a process to close down blood vessels. Usually this is done when the vessels provide flow to a tumor of some sort. Depending on the location, there are definite risks. In addition, to get to the blood vessel which is to be embolized, there are the geral risks of bleeding, infection, soft tissue injury, and allergic reaction anytime you enter the skin, such as going into a blood vessel. READ MORE

  • Is an MRI with contrast safe for kids?

MRI contrast is a salt solution of gadolinium. It is rare for a person to have an allergy, but this can happen. In addition, gadolinium is not safe in patients with a depressed creatinine clearance of less than 30. Creatinine clearance can be calculated based on blood work. Because of the powerful magnets involved, people with metal implants and most pacemakers should avoid the MR environment. Otherwise, MRI is perfectly safe. An MRI is an unusual way to evaluate kidney stones. Usually Ultrasound or CT is used. READ MORE

  • Do fluoroscopies hurt?

Fluoroscopy itself is painless. However, fluoroscopy is typically used as guidance for another procedure. The procedure performed under fluoroscopic guidance may be painful. READ MORE

  • What does an MRI angiography show?

MR angiography is an MRI which takes advantage of flowing blood to see what your vessels look like. It may be performed with or without intravenous administration of Gadolinium based contrast. Advantages over CT angiography is no need for Iodinated contrast and MRA can determine direction of blood flow. Disadavantages include going into MR machine which some people cannot tolerate and decreased accuracy do to artifacts. READ MORE

  • Will a breast x-ray spot any tumors?

A mammogram is essentially a "breast X-ray." They are very effective at finding tumors. In some circumstances, breast ultrasound and/or MRI may also be useful or even more effective. READ MORE
