Get to know Urogynecologist Dr. Soo Kwon, who serves patients in New York, New York.

Dr. Kwon is a trusted and well-respected urogynecologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon in New York City, New York.

The doctor’s areas of focus include female urinary incontinence, fistula of the female genital organs, pelvic organ prolapse (vaginal bulge), and vaginal hysterectomy.

Holding an academic title, Dr. Kwon serves as an Associate Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. 

Her acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1992. She then went on to perform her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, followed by her 3 year fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Specializing in women’s health, Dr. Kwon is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology & Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

A Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), she is a member of the American Urogynecologic Society, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, International Continence Society, and the International Urogynecological Association. 

Dr. Kwon’s passion is also Global Health. She has traveled to many parts of Africa, South and Central America to perform and teach female reconstructive surgeries and vaginal fistula repairs for over a decade.  She was appointed as the Director for Ghana Fellowship Program by International Urogynecological Association.  This is the only accredited fellowship in the field in Sub-Saharan Africa. Also, she led a large group of doctors and nurses to underdeveloped countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo for obstetric fistula repair surgery and to assist in building programs to help these women without resources. Her international work, including in the fistula repair arena was recognized by the International Urogynecological Association (largest society in the world for urogynecology/ Female Pelvic Surgery), she was selected to be the Vice-Chair of Foundation of International Urogynecological Association to develop programs to help women with pelvic floor disorders.

Her other philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Kwon is the Co-Founder of the Freed and Kwon Medical Humanitarian Fund, which has been created to provide surgical services, educate medical students and residents, and improve the general health of the communities it serves in developing countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. 

Dr. Kwon, who has performed thousands of minimally invasive procedures, including robotic  and natural orifice vaginal surgery, tailors her approach to the patient with their best interests in mind. The final choice of treatment for her patients is decided by the collaboration between Dr. Kwon and her patient, always taking into account what the patient desires as well as what is best for their health. This formula has led to her patients, no matter what their condition, having the best result from non-surgical treatment as well as surgical treatment.
