Dr. Shurmur is a leading cardiologist at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. He serves as Division Chief of Cardiology, a role he embraced in 2014. As a cardiologist, Dr. Shurmur has clinical interests in cardiovascular disease prevention and lipids, as well as structural and interventional cardiology. His outpatient practice is at the Center for Cardiovascular Health, while he remains affiliated with the University Medical Center for inpatient care.

Dr. Shurmur attended the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his medical degree in 1985. He continued his journey with an internal medicine residency, which he conducted at the New England Deaconess Hospital, now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts (1988). With a passion for cardiology, he stayed with New England Deaconess Hospital to complete his cardiovascular disease medicine fellowship.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology.
