Does dairy cause constipation?
Constipation is very common at this age. While about 5% of patients with dairy intolerance or allergy can present with constipation, it can still present in this age group for other reasons. Excluding milk for 2-3 weeks from his diet can help you exclude milk as the cause. However, dietary changes with increased fiber, and fluid intake can help. What can I do if my baby is considered colic?
Colic does not have any proven treatment. However, there other diseases in infant that can present as colic such as gastroesophageal reflux, and milk protein allergy. Treating gastroesophageal reflux and making changes to the feeding such as mom avoiding dairy, and sometimes soy if breastfeeding, or changing to semi-elemental, or amino acid formula can sometimes help. How can celiac disease be diagnosed?
Skin rash with blisters and itching that is usually bilateral, known as Dermatitis Herpetiformis is sometimes associated with celiac disease. Although less common in Pediatric population. The symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, abdominal bloating, gassiness, constipation, poor weight gain, weight loss, nausea, abdominal pain, dermatitis herpetiformis, bone pain, joint pain, short stature, weakness, tiredness, seizure, numbness, headache, infertility. Celiac disease can be confirmed by a Pediatric gastroenterologist with upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsies (tissues) taken from the surface of the small intestinal lining showing damage to the lining (villi) after the screening blood test showed elevated anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody (TTG). The skin rash of dermatitis Herpetiformis is diagnosed by a dermatologist with skin biopsies (tissues) of the rash showing the typical damage of inflammatory cells and deposition of IgA. READ MORE

Get to know Pediatric Gastroenterologist Dr. Valentine Enemuo, who serves the population of Kansas. Dr. Enemuo is a dual certified and fellowship trained Pediatric Gastroenterologist. He currently practices with the Midwest Women’s & Children’s Specialty Group Overland Park Kansas and is affiliated with Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Saint Luke. The Overland Park hospital has been serving the healthcare needs of Johnson County and the surrounding counties since December of 1978. The hospital is a licensed 343-bed facility offering acute medical care services to our patients. The hospital campus features four medical office buildings, two pharmacies and the offices of more than 100 physicians. Saint Luke’s has been at the heart of Kansas City health care, and has a reputation for innovation, quality and compassion. Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City is nationally ranked in three specialties, including cardiology and heart surgery, gynecology, and neurology and neurosurgery. Dr. Enemuo graduated with his Medical Degree from the University Of Nigeria in 1994, giving him over two decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his medical degree he relocated to the united states and graduated with his Pediatrics residency with the Charles R Drew University of Med and Science. Furthering his training he completed his Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship with the University of British Columbia. Dr. Enemuo holds certification in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Enemuo has great interactions with his patients one stating, “Dr. Enemuo is very thorough and responsive. He never leaves us waiting for test results. He is readily available to answer questions. His office is very efficient and we usually get in without a prolonged wait.” Pediatric gastroenterologists are trained to treat complications of the gastrointestinal system, or digestive system, in children.
