Sarah Lowenthal, MD, CEDS-C is a nationally recognized eating disorder specialist and board-certified family physician based in the San Francisco Bay Area. With more than 20 years of experience, she provides compassionate, comprehensive care for children, adolescents, and adults with eating disorders and co-occurring mental health diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and ADHD. She approaches her practice through a social justice lens and a Health at Every Size orientation, caring for individuals of all genders, sizes, shapes, and abilities at any stage of recovery. Dr. Lowenthal earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she also served as Chief Resident in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She is one of the few physicians in the country designated by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP) as a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and Consultant (CEDS-C), and she provides supervision and training for clinicians entering the field. In addition, she has served as Medical Liaison and Board Member for the IAEDP SF Bay Area Chapter and is a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders. Recognized for her skill and compassionate approach, Dr. Lowenthal has received multiple honors throughout her career. She was named a “Top Doctor” by Marin Magazine in 2020, a “Top 10 Metro Area Doctor” in 2014, and one of East Bay’s “Best Doctors” by Oakland Magazine in 2012. She is also a six-time recipient of the Patient’s Choice Award and a four-time recipient of the Compassionate Doctor Award, reflecting her reputation for combining clinical excellence with warmth and empathy. Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Lowenthal is an experienced speaker, advocate, and consultant. She provides guidance to patients and families navigating insurance and disability coverage challenges, and she is deeply committed to advancing education and awareness about eating disorders. When she is not working, she enjoys hiking on Mt. Tam, spending time with friends, singing, and sharing belly rubs with her miniature dachshund, Schultz.
