Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Laura Fernandes, who serves patients in The Woodlands, Texas.

An exceptional cardiologist, Dr. Fernandes works with patients at Woodlands Heart & Vascular Institute, specializing in interventional cardiology and venous reflux disease. She has shared her expertise in the medical community for over 30 years. 

Recognized as a kind and compassionate doctor who treats each patient with patience and understanding, she counsels her patients on living a healthy lifestyle and coaches them on how to make good choices for their wellbeing. She is focused on serving the cardiac needs of adult patients of all ages, advancing great cardiovascular health, and meeting the individual objectives of every patient.

“No two patients are the same. I treat each patient as an individual. I take the time to get to know my patients and their lifestyle, which assists me in making a more accurate diagnosis and treatment strategy” expressed the doctor.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Fernandes graduated from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil, as one of the top ten students in her class. Upon relocating to the United States, she completed her research assignment in rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania, and fulfilled a three-year residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Subsequently, she relocated to the Houston area in 1997 to attend a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Baylor College of Medicine that she completed in June 2000. Immediately after, she continued her training with an additional fellowship in interventional cardiology at The Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, which she completed in 2001.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), the doctor is board-certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Very active in hospital and physician affairs in The Woodlands and Conroe area, Dr. Fernandes currently has hospital appointments at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, Houston Methodist Hospital Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Woodlands Hospital, Conroe Regional Medical Center, and CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands Hospital.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
