  • How do dental inlays differ from crowns?

Dental inlays go inside the tooth, basically like a filling, but made in a lab or in a dental office that has that technology, and then it is bonded/cemented into the tooth. Crowns cover the entire surface of the tooth. It is not about one being better than the other, it is about what is most appropriate for the tooth. READ MORE

  • How do you make gingivitis go away?

Brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once a day are important for prevention and maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. If you have not been flossing regularly, your gums will bleed for a while until the bacteria is reduced. An electric toothbrush is beneficial as well. However, if it has been some time since you have been to a dentist for a professional cleaning there is a good chance that calculus has built up under the gum tissue. This cannot be removed at home and will not only contribute to gingivitis, but will not allow for the tissues to heal until it is removed professionally. So, my advice is to make an appointment at a dental office so that your situation can be evaluated and then the best recommendations can be made. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How do you know when a crown needs to be replaced?

Unless the crown breaks, often you would not know if your crown needs replacement. That is why it is important to see your dentist on a regular basis so that the integrity of the crown can be evaluated, and if decay (a cavity) starts under the crown, it can be found in the early stages. • Can a decaying wisdom tooth cause headaches?

  • What can I eat before a bone graft?

If there is no sedation involved, then there are no limitations to what you can eat prior to the surgery. If there is any type of sedation, then I would clarify with your dentist any special instructions. READ MORE

  • What can I do to stop tooth pain at home?

Ibuprofen is usually the best option for tooth pain. You can alternate that with Tylenol. However, if the tooth needs a root canal, these over-the-counter medications may not work and topicals, such as anbesol, definitely will not be effective. Your best option is to visit a dentist and see if there is something that can be done palliatively until you finish your move. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to fill 3 cavities?

It depends upon how large the cavities are. I would call the dental office and ask them that question. READ MORE

  • Does cavity pain go away?

Yes, cavity pain can come and go. Many times this is a sign that the nerve of the tooth may be dying in which case you would need a root canal. Of course, without an exam, it is difficult to say for sure. If at all possible, I would get into a dentist where ever you are so that he/she can take a look and make a proper diagnosis. In health, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How do you know if you have a wisdom tooth infection?

It is possible that you have an infection in the area of your wisdom tooth. The only way to know for sure is to go to your dentist for an exam and X-ray. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Can an infected root canal tooth be saved?

Yes and no. If the infection is a result of the tooth being fractured, then the tooth cannot be saved. However, often times a root canal can be retreated or there is a procedure called an apicoectomy where the endodontist does a surgery at the bottom of the root. Best to get back with your dentist to determine the best treatment going forward. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Can a cracked dental bridge be repaired?

Not knowing what exactly is cracked on the bridge, this is difficult to answer. Typically, if a bridge is cracked, it needs to be replaced. If some of the porcelain is missing, the bridge can remain in that condition as long as there is no decay or loss of integrity around the teeth keeping it in place. READ MORE

  • Why do my gums bleed in the mornings?

Bleeding indicates inflammation and/or infection. In short, yes, you have signs of gum disease, but the extent can only be determined from a dental exam, which includes measuring periodontal pocket depths. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How can dry socket be prevented?

Dry socket is the result of loss of the blood clot from the removal site leaving exposed bone which is sensitive and painful. It is treated with a packing material that is placed and then removed every 3-5 days until enough tissue grows to cover the bone so the pain is resolved. Ways to prevent dry socket are to avoid the following after tooth removal: smoking, sucking through straws, carbonated beverages, vigorous swishing/rinsing. Return to the dentist who removed your tooth/teeth so he/she can get you more comfortable during the healing process. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Is scaling of teeth painful?

Scaling teeth occurs every time you go to the dental office for a dental "cleaning." Scaling is just a more technical term. The extent of scaling can vary depending upon the health of the patient's periodontium (bone and gums). Typically, this is not a painful procedure and if more advanced therapy is needed, there are several options to reduce discomfort. Hope this helps, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How long does a dry socket last with medication?

Typically, the medication and packing will last for 3-5 days depending upon the extent of the dry socket. So, it will be necessary for you to return to your dentist every 3-5 days until the socket is no longer symptomatic. In health, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Can I take pain medicine for tooth pain?

While it is OK to take pain meds for tooth pain, I would recommend that you make an appointment with your dentist in order to determine the actual cause. The earlier a problem is addressed, the less extensive the treatment needed. I would recommend that you do NOT take any pain meds the day of your appointment so that you do not mask any symptoms. In health, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • What type of anesthesia is used for dental extraction?

If you are asking about anesthesia to numb the tooth, typically that will be lidocaine, marcaine, septocaine and something similar. This is the same as would be used for a dental filling, though marcaine is a long acting anesthetic. There are not any side effects that would be different from having a dental filling completed. If you are asking about sedation, that is different and needs to be discussed with your dentist/oral surgeon. In health, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Will cavities require root canals if left untreated?

Typically, cavities left untreated will progress and if they are given the time to progress far enough that the decay gets to the nerve, then a root canal or removal of the tooth will be necessary. The best way to avoid root canals is to go to the dentist on a regular basis, usually every 6 months, so that decay can be treated early and emergencies can be prevented. READ MORE

  • Is a dry socket an infection?

A dry socket is not an infection. When the blood clot is lost, bone is exposed creating pain. You need to see the doctor who removed your teeth so that they can place a special packing that will reduce the discomfort. READ MORE

  • Why does my son have yellow teeth?

The color you are seeing is likely coming from the second layer of the tooth called the dentin, and this is where all teeth get their color. For some that color is more grayish and others more yellow. You can discuss whitening options with your dentist, but if it does not bother your child, then the color is probably fine. READ MORE
