Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Jose J. Vicens-Villafana, who serves patients in Valhalla, New York.

Dr. Vicens-Villafana is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist whose main focus is gynecological surgery. He is currently the Associate Medical Director of Advanced Gynecological and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. Westchester Medical Center, the 895-bed regional medical system serving New York’s Hudson Valley region and beyond, encompasses a regional academic medical center, children’s hospital, community hospital, two inpatient behavioral health centers, homecare, and numerous outpatient health and related services. From prevention to education and treatment, the physicians, health care staff, and volunteers at Westchester Medical Center have a reputation as the region’s most advanced and innovative health care delivery system.

Dr. Vicens-Villafana is also an Assistant Professor at New York Medical College in Valhalla. Dr. Vicens-Villafana has served as an obstetrician-gynecologist in the Women’s Health Department at Open Door Family Medical Center in Portchester, New York. He has also served as an Instructor of Family Medicine for the Phelps/NYMC Family Medicine Residency Program at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, New York. 

Dr. Vicens-Villafana earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York Medical College where he served as Executive Chief Resident, while conducting his clinical rotations at Westchester Medical Center and Metropolitan Hospital Center.

With a passion to the specialty of women’s health and an unwavering commitment to changing the lives of his patients for the better, Dr. Vicens-Villafana has distinguished himself as a leader and expert in his field.

Dr. Vicens-Villafana is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that board certifies obstetricians and gynecologists and offers continuing certification to OB-GYNS in the United States and Canada. Board certification is a voluntary process for those physicians who choose to pursue certification.

Dr. Vicens-Villafana is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the Society of Medical Graduates of Puerto Rico and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. Dr. Vicens-Villafana attributes his success to his passion for medicine and his unwavering commitment to his specialty.

Dr. Vicens-Villafana’s passion for teaching has won him recognition and multiple teaching awards at various levels of his career. He has been presented with many awards, including Resident of the Year Award, Resident Medical Student Teaching Award, Resident Humanism Award, and Gold Humanism Honor Society Teaching Award.

Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. OB-GYNs, like Dr. Vicens-Villafana, specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders that affect women. Additionally, they work with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during childbirth, and into postpartum.
