Chiropractic adjustments, stretching and strengthening exercises. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor help with ADHD?

Yes, it can! It has been seen to help reduce symptoms with occiput and neck adjustments. A chiropractor also trained in acupuncture is also beneficial. Hope this helps! Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • Does straightening your spine increase height?

That depends on how bad your posture and the curvatures of your spine are. It could add mm to your height unless you have some extreme curvatures happening, then it can increase about an inch or so. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How does chiropractic help the immune system?

Chiropractic helps the immune system through the adjustments. Our nervous system controls everything in our body. When you adjust the misalignment, you take away the impedance that is being put on that nerve, thus allowing the nervous system to function correctly. When the nervous system can function correctly, the immune system is allowed to function optimally along with other systems of the body. Hope this helps! Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • Is going to the chiropractor 3 times a week too much?

In the beginning of your treatment, no. It is normal for the first couple weeks while your pain level is high. I only have my patients see me 2-3 times per week if their pain levels are in the 7-10 out of 10 range and that only lasts a week or 2 at the most. As your pain levels decrease, your frequency of visits should decrease as well. Hope this helps! Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How long does it take to realign your spine?

Typically your realigned after every adjustment but staying aligned is the hard part especially if you have never been adjusted before. Your body gets use to being out of whack that when you are realigned your body doesn’t think it’s right. It takes a few treatments before it starts realizing that the alignment from the adjustments is where you should be. Everyone is also different and responds at different rates. I have some patients that I only see a handful of times and others that it takes or months depending on the condition, location and symptoms. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • Is it bad to crack your wrist?

No, it is not as long as it is not painful when you crack them. If you feel the need to constantly crack your wrist, the biomechanics might not be functioning properly and need your wrists adjusted. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor adjust your sinuses?

Yes, but not in the way we adjust other bones/joints. With my patients, I will take an activator (low force adjusting tool) and use that over their sinuses. It helps knock things loose and gets them draining. I will also take my fingers and rub my fingers from their nose to the end of their cheek bones. That pressure seems to help bring a lot of relief as well. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How do you know if your spine is out of alignment?

Good ways to tell if you’re out of alignment is by your range motion. Is it harder for you to turn your head one way than the other? Is it painful if you turn your head one way, but not the other way or not as painful? Is it harder to lean one way than the other or now difficult to touch your toes or lean back? If any of these are painful, then those are also signs of being out of alignment. Hope this helps! Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How can I adjust my wrists myself?

Hello! There is no way to adjust your wrist yourself. Trust me, I would love to know how to do that one myself. Until you can get your wrists adjusted, I would stretch the muscles in your forearms since those tendons travel through the wrist into your fingers. That should help relieve any pain. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from a dislocation?

Everyone is different and recovers at different rates. Staying moving and strengthening your ligaments with band work around that joint should help you recover faster. Nothing strenuous, but staying active will help. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How do you know if back pain is muscle or disc?

There are several ways to distinguish between muscle and disc. If you lay on your back and have them lift one leg at a time while straight and it hurts then it might be a disc. If you feel stretch then most likely muscle. If it gets better through out the day most likely muscle. Stretching and moving makes it feel better then it’s muscle. If you can only get relief while leaning forward then most likely a disc. If it’s a disc then you would have numbness or shooting pains into one of your legs also. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • What exercises help herniated discs?

A good one to do is McKenzie extensions. Stand up with feet apart. Put your hands backwards on your hips (thumbs in front). Then lean back and come back up as 1 rep. Do 2-3 sets of 10 daily. Dr. Kortni READ MORE

  • How should I sleep with neck pain?

Not so much the position you sleep in that makes a difference but your pillow. I would look into getting a water pillow that you can fill to your comfort level. My office can’t keep them on the shelves. Everyone that works in my office has one. Several of my patients with neck pain no longer have issues with their neck. READ MORE

  • Can I exercise with intercostal muscle strain?

Light cardio workouts if your pain level isn’t too high. Like walking or light jogs. Nothing intense or strenuous. If your pain level is still high then I suggest rest. Once an intercostal muscle is strained or angry they like to stay strained and angry for a couple weeks. READ MORE

  • How often should I get adjusted by a chiropractor?

1-2 times a month is what we call maintenance care. Helps prevent future injuries and your body functioning optimally. Now, if you have something going on such as low back pain or neck pain, you’ll have to be seen more than that until your body starts holding your adjustments well. When your body is so used to being out of whack, it thinks that when you are in place that it isn’t right. After your complaint such as low back is resolved, then you can move to maintenance care. • Does chiropractic help spondylosis?

    Yes it can!! READ MORE

  • Do you have to take your clothes off for chiropractor?

Honestly depends on what chiropractor you go to. Chiropractors that practice Gonstead will most likely make you wear a gown. Most offices however don’t. I do not make patients change their clothes or take their clothes off in my office. Best way to find out what office will is to call ahead of time and ask what technique they practice (several types of adjusting styles) and if they make you gown up and take your clothes off. Most chiropractor offices that I have been in do not. READ MORE

  • How do you know if your ankle is out of place?

There can be several indications of your ankle needing an adjustment. Compare it to your other ankle and see if there’s a decrease in motion like pointing your toes down or trying to point your toes up towards the ceiling. Any recent injuries to your ankle like an ankle sprain or even if you’re on your feet a lot and they hurt by the end of the day. Another sign is if it’s hard or hurts your ankle to do squats. READ MORE

  • Do ankle sprains ever fully heal?

Yes they should! I would start off by getting your feet adjusted that way the biomechanics in your feet are functioning properly. Then follow with some ankle strengthening exercises using a band. This way you strengthen the ligaments in your ankle. READ MORE

Get to know Chiropractor Dr. Kortni Richards, who serves patients in Clinton, Iowa.

A licensed chiropractor, Dr. Richards works alongside Dr. Shannon Cody Woodward at Integrated Muscle & Spine Chiropractic Clinic in Clinton, Iowa.

Unlike conventional medicine, which focuses on attempting to treat disease once it occurs, Integrated Muscle & Spine Chiropractic Clinic emphasizes improving health in an effort to reduce the risk of pain and illness in the first place. Most people would rather be healthy and avoid illness, if they could. This is one of the main reasons for the big surge in the popularity of the wellness center.

Some of the conditions treated include: low back pain, mid back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder pain, rotator cuff injuries, knee pain, TMJ, migraines, headaches, sprains/strains, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, sprained ankles, foot pain, plantar fasciitis, wrist/hand pain, rib pain, fibromyalgia, upper and lower cross syndromes, and many others.

The first chiropractor in her family, Dr. Richards is originally from the California/Arizona border before moving to Iowa. After graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from California Baptist University in 2016, she went on to earn her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2020.

During her time at Palmer, she was an extremity intern, which involved teaching extremity adjusting as well. While at Palmer, she also trained in flexion distraction and activator.

Currently, Dr. Richards is certified in SFMA and plans on adding other certifications.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns, including neck pain, back pain, headaches, vertigo and a long list of other ailments and conditions. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself naturally, without the use of medication or surgery.

Outside of the office, Dr. Richards enjoys hunting, fishing, scuba diving, playing sand volleyball, and pretty much anything else outdoors. Her favorite place to vacation is anywhere with a beach.
