  • Can a pathology report be wrong?

Sure, but you may not have mono since a lot of things cause similar symptoms. There are more specific tests for mono. See if your doctor will order those, along with investigating other possibilities. Perhaps try another lab? Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • How long does it take for pathology results to come back?

Depends on the case. Most cases come out within 24 hours. Liver biopsies take a little longer due to additional tissue testing, lab correlation and possible consultation. If your doctor keeps saying they don't have the results, call the lab directly to confirm that. If the lab says the resutls are ready, you can sign a release with the medical records department and get a copy yourself. If the lab seems reluctant to tell you anything, it is probably becuase they don't want to overstep the doctor. Some doctors get upset about that. I have had that happen to me. But if I know the results are ready, I am more than happy to give patients a copy of the results and explain the results if need be. Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • Do the gender blood tests actually work?

I am not familiar with this sort of testing. You need to ask your gynecologist. If you would just wait for about 2 mored months, you would know by ultrasound. Genitalia do not develop until 11 weeks. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • What blood tests can detect mono?

EBV titers, monospot. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • What blood tests can diagnose celiac disease?

The ones I am familiar with are IgA and tissue transaminase. It is best to do tissue and serology correlation. Each one by themselves could be due to other things. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • Do PAP smears note abnormal growths?

A pap smear will identify atypical, dysplastic and malignant cells. If such cells are found, your doctor will advise you of the next steps. Good luck. Renee Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • Does an elevated CA-125 indicate cancer?

Not necessarily. Elevated CA-125 levels may be indicative of pancreatic or ovarian cancer. It could also mean that ovaries have multiple cysts in them. What it does mean that further investigation is required such as referral to a specialist, X-rays or possibly surgery. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • How can I get screened for genital herpes?

Go see your gynecologist or urologist. They can assist you with this. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • Should I get tests if I might have melanoma?

Yes. Your doctor needs to refer you to a dermatologist who can examine and remove the lesion, so it can be tested by the pathologist. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • What's the difference between pathologist and pediatric pathologist?

A pediatric pathologist underwent a fellowship, which is an extra year or tow beyond residency, to learn specifically about pediatric stuff. This does come in handy with tumors and what not. They may also receive more training in childhood blood disorders. your doctor may had referred you to more of a specialist since your child may have something that they feel is odd. Not saying it is odd, just their impression. This is not to say that one should always go to a subspecialist. All depends on the perceived situation. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • What should I expect during my cytopathology follow up?

He wants to discuss the results with you. He could tell you that your follow-ups will be more frequent, schedule additional cytology testing, a biopsy, or surgery. All depends on what the results are. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • If I call my pathologist for my results, will I get them right away?

Depends on what type of test you had done. Check with your doctor's office first and see if the tests are ready there. If not, check with the pathology office to see what the status is. If they are ready and your doctor says he doesn't have them yet, I would suggest going to medical records and sign a release to get your results. This seems to work best if the pathologist works inside a hospital. It is best to discuss the results with your doctor since they know you better than the pathologist. However, if you have specific questions that you feel the pathologist can only answer or you don't think you are getting good information from your doctor, most pathologists would be happy to speak with you. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • Do pathologists do surgery?

Pathologists are physicians. Basic training is 4-5 years after medical school. Many now do an additional 1-2 years of training for sub specialization. Some do perform procedures. They may biopsy bone marrow, aspirate cells from a lesion and perhaps minor surgery such as removal of a small mole. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • How is Hepatitis B detected?

There is a blood test for this virus. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • What does a pathology report tell you?

What was removed, is it cancerous or not, did they get it all, will it spread if cancerous - basically, it dictates what the doctor will do next. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • How are allergies diagnosed?

Go to an allergist. They will do a variety of tests. Can be costly and not paid for by insurance. There are blood tests and skin tests. The allergist would know more details. Thanks. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • What does a urinalysis for kids examine?

Blood, infections, protein, sugar, specific gravity, ph. Pretty much the same they would in an adult. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • How is HPV diagnosed?

Go see your gynecologist and discuss your concerns. Usually the way to test for HPV is doing a cervical exam and obtaining a sample of cervical tissue for testing. There are probably others. That is the one I am familiar with. Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE

  • What tests are used to diagnose hepatitis C?

First the doctor needs to check the blood and perform liver function tests to see if there is actually something wrong with the liver. Then if those tests indicate something is wrong and it is indicative of something viral, the doctor (staff) will draw blood to check for the different types of Hepatitis, including C. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

  • What is used to test for diabetes?

Your doctor may first collect a urine sample from you. If that is suggested, then a fasting blood sugar will be requested. You must not eat or drink after midnight and have the test done first thing in the morning. If there is still a question, you may have to undergo a glucose tolerance test for a few hours. You will be given a load of glucose, usually a liquid, then your blood is tested at intervals to see how y our body processes glucose. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
