Why are bone marrow tests done?
It can tell if something is wrong with your white blood cells, red blood cells. platelets, iron stores and bone, such as, do have enough, the right mix or do they look abnormal. It can tell if there are things that are not supposed to be there: bugs, fibrosis, leukemia, etc. It is an invasive procedure. They will put a fairly large needle into your hip to get a sample of bone marrow there. They will sterilize and numb the area of overlying skin and may give you medicine to relax you. Most people are conscious for this sort of procedure. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
Should my child be getting a blood test often?
In my opinion, your child should be referred to a dietician, and you should be asked questions about sun exposure and family history. If a diet plan is prescribed, one usually would not see changes until 4-6 weeks. Monitor your child's progress. If the lethargy worsens during the time period of diet and redraw, contact your physician. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
What does a diagnosis of anemia involve?
Your doctor will check a complete blood count and possibly an iron study. In the complete blood count, there are values called hemoglobin and hematocrit. These tests tell how much iron, which is a part of hemoglobin, there is in your red blood cells. The iron study will indicate how much iron is in your system and how it is being utilized. Good luck. How is a liver disease diagnosed in children?
Basic liver function tests can be performed in both children and adults. Please share with your doctor what type of liver diseases run in your family, and if a specific test is needed for that particular disease, it can be ordered. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
How can I prepare for my blood test?
Depends on the test, If it is for glucose or lipids, I would recommend not having anything to eat or drink after midnight, so you will have a true baseline. I can't think of anything else you would need to do for other sorts of tests. You should also ask the drawing center for advice. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
How can people check the liver function?
The name of the test is LFTs (liver function tests). It is a battery of tests that check liver function. Usually your doctor can have them drawn or write an order for you to have them drawn at the lab of your choice. I suggest having your doctor explain the results to you since he/she knows your history. Just looking at labs on their own accord will not give you the whole story as to what is going on with you. How will a pathologist test for allergies in my son?
These tests are performed by an ENT. They usually do a skin test where multiple allergies are tested. Ask an ENT for details. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
My ENT found a mass in my neck. What could it be?
It could be a cyst from a goiter, salivary glandular tissue or a lymph node. Usually these sorts of things are benign, but the possibility of a malign process must be excluded. Was other testing done as well? Your doctor will incorporate those results along with the pathology and develop a course or action.Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE
What tests will be done to confirm anemia?
The definition of anemia is a decreased number of red blood cells. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels are checked for this. Other tests are done in an effort to define the type of anemia. The testing for this is the same for adults and children. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
What precautions should pathologist take when dealing with samples of contagious diseases?
Always wear gloves. If dealing with something fresh, big and bloody, wear protective clothing, shoe covers and at least glasses. A face shield may be needed as well. Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE
How often should I get blood tests to check my body's levels?
There are no specific tests for tiredness. There are no tests known as body levels. Have your doctor give you a complete physical and they will decide what and if further testing is needed. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE
How often should I get my creatinine levels checked?
Work with your doctor. They will probably have them done each time you see them at first. Once they stabilize, they will recommended less often checks. When you say fluctuations, how much are they doing that? One point, a tenth of a point, a hundredth of a point. This will also determine how much they need to be checked. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
Can creatinine fluctuate between morning and night?
How much fluctuations are you talking about? Laboratories do have a range of variability. Tests are done in labs to make sure this variability does not clinically affect patient results. If the variability is >0.5, then I think the lab needs to look into it and the doctor needs to be alerted. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
What does a low white blood cell count mean?
Lots of things, from the bone marrow not being able to produce them, to a rip roaring infection, or a medicine that wipes the marrow out. A pediatric hematologist/oncologist would be able to isolate the exact cause in your case. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
What is a pus culture?
Pus is a term used to describe the gooey part of a wound. It can be gray, yellow or even green. The doctor would take a sterile swab and get some of the pus. it is then sent for culture to see what bacteria is growing in it. This would assist with what type of medicine can fight the wound. How long does it usually take to detect H1N1 in a person?
That surprises me. Most doctor offices have a way to tell you immediately if you have flu or not. They may be testing something more advanced which would require an outside reference lab's help. Check back with the office if you have not heard in a week. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE
What samples are required for a DNA test?
Blood, saliva and/or a buccal swab. To get that, you would open your mouth, and the doctor/nurse will scrap the inside of your cheek with a swab similar to a q-tip. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
My son's arterial blood gas test in the hospital is showing a high level of CO2. Should we get this checked again?
You could but it sounds like that the pneumonia is preventing him form releasing the stored up CO2. That is not unusual. Continue to get the pneumonia and follow up with subsequent arterial gases. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
If I didn’t eat 2 hours before my PP sugar test, will the result be inaccurate?
How much time are we talking about? If it is just a few minutes, probably not. If it is more than an hour, it may cause some problems. You need to check with your laboratory concerning the exact parameters. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE
How long should a urine culture take?
No. Urine cultures are usually checked as follows: 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours then 7 days. Most results from urine cultures are reliable after 3 days, but there are some organisms that take longer to grow beyond the usual 3. That is why it is prudent to issue final reports after 7 days.
