Does a pathologist perform autopsies?
Yes, pathologists do autopsies. If it is a requested one, the next of kin or the one with power of attorney is the ONLY one who can request the autopsy, so your mother would not be able to make this request to the pathologist herself. If the circumstances of death are suspicious, these autopsies are usually performed by forensic pathologists. They are specialists in this field. Also, law enforcement/coroners can request these without getting permission from the family. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

What tests are used to diagnose thyroid diseases?
I am not sure there is a difference between child and adult testing. But usually they test the thyroid hormone known as free T4. They also test a hormone that stimulates the thyroid to work called TSH. The thyroid should be examined. She may need an ultrasound of the thyroid and possibly a CT/MRI scan of the head. The brain makes TSH. This should all be done under the direction of a pediatric endocrinologist. That is a specialist who deals with hormonal issues with children. One should alway try to get the child to go to bed at a decent hour. Take away electronics 1-2 hours before bed. These things should be done first before doing any sort of extensive testing. Good luck. RB Thomas, MD READ MORE

How long does it take for pathology results to come back?
Depends on the case. Most cases come out within 24 hours. Liver biopsies take a little longer due to additional tissue testing, lab correlation and possible consultation. If your doctor keeps saying they don't have the results, call the lab directly to confirm that. If the lab says the resutls are ready, you can sign a release with the medical records department and get a copy yourself. If the lab seems reluctant to tell you anything, it is probably becuase they don't want to overstep the doctor. Some doctors get upset about that. I have had that happen to me. But if I know the results are ready, I am more than happy to give patients a copy of the results and explain the results if need be. Good luck. RB Thomas,MD READ MORE
