Are there any specific preparations I need to undertake before the scan?
Hi! There is typically no prep required prior to a ct scan. Depending on the area the scan is ordered to address, you may want to ensure you wear clothing that does not have metal underwires, zippers, snaps, etc and avoid jewelry within the target area. Alternatively, you may expect to change into a hospital gown if your clothing may obscure the imaging study.
If contrast is ordered, you should expect to arrive prior to your scheduled scan time so that an RN can gain IV access, inject the contrast medium, allow the contrast to circulate, then assist you to the scanner. Following the imaging study, IV access will be discontinued before you are sent home.
Many CT scans are completed in 15 mins or less. You lie on a moving table that advances into a large donut and back out again. People who are claustrophobic typically do not report issues with CT scans. MRI scans are more frequently an issue for those with a fear of small spaces.
